🚗 April 14 – The Long Road Back to Where It All Began
After an early breakfast in Kuşadası, we hit the road by 7 AM for the long drive back to Istanbul — a 550 km journey we had to complete before 3 PM to return our rental car. The drive was smooth with two quick breaks, but Istanbul’s city traffic caught us off-guard in the last stretch. We crossed the iconic Bosphorus Bridge from the Asian to the European side, a symbolic end to our road trip.
In the flurry of navigating traffic, we forgot to refill the fuel tank — a rookie mistake that cost us a hefty penalty. Though the car return process at Avec Levent was otherwise smooth, communication with the staff was a bit of a challenge.
🏨 Checking Into Comfort: Artisan Istanbul MGallery
A short taxi ride from Levent brought us to our hotel: Artisan Istanbul MGallery, nestled in the heart of the city just 800 meters from the buzzing Istiklal Street. Part of the Accor group, this stay was our most luxurious yet — and thanks to our Accor points, we paid a fraction of the usual price.
Our room was enormous, with plush interiors and a bathroom that felt more like a spa. The comfort was much needed after a week on the road. That evening, we took a leisurely walk down Istiklal Street, soaking in its vibrant nightlife and the iconic red tram rolling down the cobblestones. After dinner, we returned to our elegant room to rest for the sightseeing ahead.
📱 Exploring Istanbul with a Klook Pass
Before our arrival, we had purchased the Klook Pass – Turkey, which offered access to five activities (four paid and one free) from a selection of top attractions. We chose the following:
- Hagia Sophia (External Guided Tour)
- Basilica Cistern
- Topkapi Palace Museum (Guided Tour)
- Dolmabahce Palace
- Sunset Bosphorus Cruise (Bonus)
The pass gave us flexibility, saved us money, and — most importantly helped us avoid standing in long queues under the April sun.
🕌 April 15 – Sultanahmet’s Icons: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque & More
We started the day by hopping onto a Kabataş–Sultanahmet tram, gliding smoothly toward the heart of old Istanbul.
🥘 Traditional Turkish Breakfast
A small café near the tram stop served us a delicious Menemen (eggs scrambled with tomatoes and peppers), crisp simit, and piping hot Turkish tea. Energized, we were ready to dive into centuries of history.
🏛️ Hagia Sophia – Where Time Stands Still
Our first stop was the Hagia Sophia, where we joined an external guided tour included in our Klook Pass. Standing beneath its colossal dome, surrounded by mosaics, minarets, and marble, we felt transported across time — from Byzantine basilica to Ottoman mosque and now back to a working mosque that also welcomes tourists.
Climbing to the upper gallery, we admired age-old Christian mosaics partially revealed beneath layers of Islamic calligraphy. The guide brought the building’s rich, multi-faith history to life.
🚪 Blue Mosque – A Brief Glimpse
We then walked across Sultanahmet Square to the Blue Mosque, eager to see its famous blue-tiled interior. Unfortunately, the main prayer hall was closed to non-muslims since a prayer was ongoing, so we could only admire its towering minarets and imposing exterior.
Not wanting to waste precious time, we decided to return later and made our way instead to our next stop.


💧 Basilica Cistern – Istanbul’s Mysterious Underground
Descending into the Basilica Cistern, we stepped into a hauntingly beautiful world of softly lit columns reflected in still water. The eerie ambiance, with its Medusa-head columns and cool, damp air, was a fascinating contrast to the grandeur above ground. The audio guide helped us appreciate its engineering marvel and role in ancient water supply.




🙏 A Return to the Blue Mosque – This Time, Inside
As afternoon prayers concluded, we returned to the Blue Mosque, where the main hall was now open to tourists. Walking into the main entrance, we were awestruck. The serenity, the sheer scale, and the gentle blue hues from the Iznik tiles created an atmosphere of peaceful devotion. Aanya admired the calligraphy and symmetry, while we simply stood still, taking it all in.



🛍️ Grand Bazaar & Sweet Treats
We then stopped for lunch and later wandered through the legendary Grand Bazaar — one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. With over 4,000 shops spread across a maze of vibrant lanes, it was a sensory feast: glittering lanterns, handwoven carpets, spices, sweets, and much more. The mix of history, craftsmanship, and chaos made it an unforgettable experience. We picked up a few souvenirs — Fridge magnets and Turkish delight to nibble on later. Before leaving, we treated ourselves to semolina halva served with a scoop of dondurma (Turkish ice cream) — a delicious, stretchy, slightly chewy end to a day full of iconic sights.
Dinner that night? A warm bowl of vegetarian biryani from a nearby eatery — familiar, comforting, and just what we needed before calling it a day.
🌊 April 16 – Exploring Balat, Fener, and the Bosphorus
🌍 Morning: Walking Tour of Balat and Fener
After a hearty breakfast at a quaint bakery adjacent to our hotel, we embarked on a guided walking tour of the historic neighborhoods of Balat and Fener, booked through GetYourGuide. These districts, nestled along the Golden Horn, are renowned for their vibrant streets, colorful houses, and rich tapestry of cultures.
Our guide led us through winding alleys, past Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era synagogues, and Armenian homes, each narrating tales of Istanbul’s diverse heritage. The highlight was undoubtedly the colorful staircases and the iconic pastel-hued houses that have become Instagram favorites. The blend of history and modern-day charm in these neighborhoods was truly captivating.
🍽️ Afternoon: Culinary Delights and Spice Bazaar
Post-tour, we took a tram from Fener to Sultanahmet, where we indulged in a delicious lunch featuring lahmacun (Turkish pizza) and refreshing ayran (a yogurt-based drink). Energized, we strolled to the Spice Bazaar, a sensory overload of colors, aromas, and flavors. Suneetha picked up some sun-dried tomatoes and saffron, while we marveled at the vast array of spices, teas, and Turkish delights.





🌊 Evening: Sunset Cruise on the Bosphorus
As the sun began its descent, we boarded the Mega Lufer for a sunset cruise along the Bosphorus. The chilly breeze was invigorating as we sailed past iconic landmarks like the Maiden’s Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, and the Bosphorus Bridge. The city’s silhouette against the setting sun was a sight to behold. Post-cruise, we dined at a cozy promenade restaurant by the port, savoring the flavors of Istanbul one last time before heading back to our hotel.






🕌 April 17 – Palatial Grandeur and a Glimpse of Asian Istanbul
👑 Morning: Topkapi Palace – The Ottoman Legacy
After an early breakfast, we hopped on the tram once again, this time for a deeper dive into Ottoman imperial history at the magnificent Topkapi Palace. Nestled just beside Hagia Sophia, this sprawling complex once served as the residence of the Ottoman sultans for over 400 years.
Our guided tour began in the first courtyard, where our knowledgeable guide walked us through the palace’s storied past—tales of sultans, concubines, and royal ceremonies echoed through the historic stones. We explored the Imperial Treasury, marveled at the Sacred Relics Room, and admired the rich detail in the Divan Chamber. Despite the crowds, we lingered at many spots to soak in the opulence and symbolism. After the guided portion, we took our time revisiting a few favorite corners, drawn in by the grandeur and charm of the architecture.







🏰 Afternoon: Dolmabahçe Palace – European Elegance on the Bosphorus
Following a satisfying lunch, we made our way to the Dolmabahçe Palace, a complete contrast to Topkapi in its style and aesthetic. Built in the 19th century, this palace stands as a symbol of the Ottoman Empire’s final chapter, heavily influenced by European baroque and neoclassical design.
Unlike Topkapi, Dolmabahçe wasn’t too crowded, allowing us to stroll leisurely through its ornately decorated halls. The Crystal Staircase, massive chandeliers, and gold-leafed ceilings left us speechless. The Harem section was equally fascinating, giving us insight into the private lives of the royals. In just two hours, we had walked through an era where East met West in architectural elegance.
🚢 Evening: Asian Side Escape to Kadıköy
To round off our day, we boarded a ferry and glided across the Bosphorus to reach the Asian side of Istanbul, a part we hadn’t explored yet. We arrived in Kadıköy around 8 PM – late, but buzzing with life. Though time was short, we wandered through the vibrant streets and picked a family-run Middle Eastern vegan restaurant for dinner.
The meal was warm, flavorful, and comforting—an unexpected delight. We ended the night with coffee and dessert at a charming café, savoring our final few moments on the Asian continent. Eventually, we hailed a taxi and returned to our hotel, exhausted but fulfilled after a day packed with discovery.


🛫 April 18 – A Gentle Goodbye to Istanbul
Our last day in Istanbul had finally arrived. After breakfast and a bit of packing, we still had a few hours before we needed to leave for the airport. I took this chance to try something I’d been curious about for a while—a traditional Turkish hamam 🧖♀️.
The experience started with a short time in the sauna, followed by a full-body scrub, a foamy massage, and a final rinse. It wasn’t quite like a regular spa—less relaxing and more energizing—but it felt amazing to check it off my list. I came out feeling fresh and ready for the journey home.
Back at the hotel, we finished packing and left our bags at the reception after checking out. With some time still on hand, we walked up to Istiklal Street one last time to soak in the atmosphere. We did some last-minute shopping, grabbed lunch, and picked up boxes of delicious baklava from Hafiz Mustafa to take home.

By late afternoon, we collected our bags and booked a taxi to the airport, arriving around 4 PM for our 7:30 PM flight back to Dubai, and onward to Bangalore. It was the end of an unforgettable adventure—our hearts full and our bags just a little heavier with memories (and sweets).
