Exploring Salzburg: A 2-Day Itinerary

Salzburg, our second stop in Austria, was a charming mix of history, music, and natural beauty. We arrived from Innsbruck on the Railjet Express, a scenic journey that took just under two hours. For our stay, we chose the Imlauer Pitter Salzburg hotel, and it couldn’t have been more perfect! Its prime location was a short walk from the railway station and close to Salzburg’s famous sights and landmarks.

Thanks to the convenient location, we explored much of the city on foot. To make the most of our visit, we also picked up a two-day Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) bus pass, which turned out to be a fantastic way to discover attractions we wanted to visit on the outskirts! Here’s how we made the most of our time in this beautiful city:

Day 1
We began our day at Mirabell Palace and Gardens, a picture-perfect spot with vibrant blooms and fountains. It was easy to see why this place is a favorite among visitors. The views of the fortress in the distance greatly introduced the city.

Next, we hopped off at Mozart’s Residence and Birthplace, a treat for any music lover. Walking through the rooms where the genius once lived and seeing his personal belongings made his story come alive.

As the evening approached, we headed to the Hohensalzburg Fortress for the Best of Mozart Concert and VIP Dinner. The cable car ride up the hill offered stunning views of Salzburg. The dinner was a feast, and the concert was magical—a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the music that defines this city.

Day 2
We started our second day with the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, part of the HOHO Blue Line route. Donning miner’s gear and sliding into the depths of the mine was exhilarating. Learning about the history of salt mining in the region gave us a new appreciation for this “white gold.” This was truly the highlight of our Salzburg experience and we did not regret the travel time getting to this mine and back, was well worth the half a day trip!

Back in Salzburg, we visited Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains. The playful water tricks caught us off guard more than once, but the laughter made it unforgettable! The palace itself was just as impressive, with its stunning design and fascinating history.

Finally, we wrapped up our trip with a leisurely stroll along Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s famous shopping street. The charming signs and boutique shops offered a delightful mix of old-world charm and modern vibes, making it a perfect spot to pick up souvenirs.

The HOHO bus pass was great for covering Salzburg’s top attractions effortlessly, especially those far away from the city center. It allowed us to hop between historic landmarks, cultural experiences, and quirky adventures, all while soaking in the city’s beauty at our own pace. Salzburg truly feels like a storybook come to life and we cherished our time in the city!
